President of USA Donald Trump visiting Ireland

Donald John Trump is the 45th and current president of the United States.

Donald Trump makes his first official trip to Ireland as US President, following a three-day state visit to the UK.

Mr Trump accepted an invitation from Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to visit Ireland while in Europe to attend events in Britain and France commemorating the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

The last act of Mr Trump's three-day state visit to Britain before travelling to Ireland will be a D-Day commemoration in Portsmouth.

He is due to arrive in Shannon Airport at 4.30pm where a meeting between the US President and the Taoiseach will take place.

It is understood the two leaders will discuss Brexit, immigration, trade, US support for Northern Ireland, and the E3 visa programme.

Mr Trump and the First Lady's visit to Ireland comes after a busy schedule in the UK where the couple took part in a number of engagements.

President Trump and the US First Lady Melania Trump are due to travel to Doonbeg in Co Clare to spend two nights at his hotel and golf resort.

Tomorrow, President Trump will travel to France for the D-Day commemoration before returning to his Doonbeg resort where a dinner will be held later that evening.

Irish Ambassador to the US Dan Mulhall and the government's special envoy to the US, Fine Gael TD John Deasy, will be among the guests.

On Friday, President Trump is expected to play golf in Doonbeg before returning to the US later that day.

Mr Trump had been due to visit Ireland last November, but the trip was postponed for operational reasons.
